A 5-Day Journey from Galway to Bunratty

Day 1

Perhaps a leisurely stroll around Galway City. Explore this mix of multi-cultural and very Irish city with its influences from the nearby Aran Islands as well as Connemara (a predominantly Irish speaking area to the north) giving Galway a unique atmosphere.

There is an abundance of quaint shops, cafés and traditional pubs and a very high standard of restaurants to chose from all with walking distance from Eyre Square in the city centre.

Galway is also home of the world famous Claddagh Ring and the traditional Galway Hooker sailing boat, often seen racing in the bay.

Must see sights would be Quay Street and Shop Street, The Spanish Arch and Wolfe Tone Bridge crossing the rapid Corrib River as well as St Nicholas’ Church.

Day 2

We head north towards the region known as Connemara, a unique and rugged landscape. You have the Wild Atlantic Way coastline to the west and then the lakes of Lough Corrib and Lough Mask to the east. There is a definite sense of Irish cultural identity here with a large proportion of the population still using Irish as their first language, together with a love of traditional music and Gaelic games.

  • Kylemore Abby is a sure stop here. Built in 1868 by Mitchell Henry MP for his wife Margaret. 40,000 sq ft., 33 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 4 sitting rooms, a ballroom, billiard room and a library. Then on a site of 13,000 acres.

Nowadays it is owned an run as a monastery by the Benedictine nuns who also produce many fine artisan products onsite and have opened the abbey up to tours. There is also a magnificent garden to see and a miniature Gothic cathedral.

Not far is Killary Fjord, Ireland’s only fjord. 16kms long and 45 meters deep with the village of Leenane at the end. Also the beautiful Connemara Loop roadway, a real gem.

Clifden is the main town in the region, well worth a visit and then the breathtaking Sky Road. A memorable day.

Day 3

We move further north to the village Louisburgh, passing through the amazing Doolagh Valley. There are many photo opportunities here and then we go on to the beautiful town of Westport. Again a friendly experience awaits and a great place to buy some Irish gifts.

Day 4

We go south today heading firstly to the village of Kinvara and the lovely Dungaire Castle, still in use today. Along the coast such an abundance of spectacular views from Ballyvaughan to Black Head, Fanore as well as the world renowned Burren landscape with its striking limestone landscape. Our day culminates with a visit to the Cliffs of Moher, Ireland’s top tourist attraction.

700ft high and 8kms long, home to 30,000 pairs of breeding birds from gannets, puffins, razorbills and cormorants. There is a top class visitor centre here and paths along the cliffs. A place you wont forget.

We might take in the villages of Liscannor and the surfing and golfing town of Lahinch too!!

A day of fresh Atlantic air and wonderful memories.

Day 5

Here we could go to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. This is a really great place to visit. There are guided tours of the castle and a walk in the folk park where they have a typical old Irish village reincarnated with onsite residents who you can talk to and ask about their lifestyle.
